When Jay said he downloaded a Ouija board app on his phone, I wasn't surprised. It sounded like the kind of daft thing he did. It was Thursday night and we were sitting in our favorite cafe, eating French fries with my favorite black coffee with half tablespoon of sugar, like always.

" Yeh karna jaruri hai? " I asked.

" Of course, it's thrilling. " He said with excitement dripping from his voice.

He put his phone on the table and loaded the app. A ouija board, filled the screen, the words YES and NO were written in flowing script in the top two corners, and beneath them were the letters of the alphabet in that same curling text, in two arches. Beneath that was a straight row of numbers from zero to nine, and underneath was printed GOODBYE.

" Isn't there some kind of law against Ouija board or something? I thought they were supposed to be dangerous. "

"Dangerous kaise? It's only a board with some letters and numbers written on it. "

" Maine sunna hai bohot sari countries mein yeh banned hai. "

" Ho sakta hai, Or they wouldn't have made the app. You're not scared, are you? It's only a bit of fun. "

" I am definitely not scared, " I said

" Hold your hand over the screen then. "

So I held out my hand, and Jay did the same, out fingertips just touching.

" The planchette thing is supposed to spell out the answers to our questions, " Jay said, indicating the little pointee disc hovering at one corner of the screen.

" Without us even touching it? "

" The ghost will move it. " He declared.

" A ghost that understand mobile phone? And don't mind the crowd? " I glanced around the packed cafe.

" I thought you were supposed to play with ouija board in haunted houses and abandoned train station. "

" That would be pretty awesome, Sarah, but since we don't have any boarded up lunatic asylum or anything around here, we'll just have to make do with what we've got. Who shall we try to contact? "

Jay asked, " Tatyavinchu? Annabell? Manjulika? "

" Priyanka. " This name came out of my mouth, without a second thought or any meaning.

" Your maternal side cousin? I mean your ex boyfriend's little sister? "

" Yes, I don't know why I said her name, it's been years I didn't even thought or remembered her but today. "

" How did she died? " He asked but I didn't had any answer because nobody said anything to me.. Even through I was thirteen at the time of her death.

" Pata nhi, she was just seven years old, and nobody told me the reason behind such a tragic. "

" Ok, then let's ask her how she died. Priyanka- what's her last name? " He looked at me for the answer.

" Nayak. " The surname slip out of my mouth.

" OK, Priyanka Nayak, we invite you to speak with us. " Nothing happened.

" Priyanka Nayak, are you there? " Jay said again.

" Koi fayda nhi Jay. " I said.

" Shayad kisi haunted ya abandon place mein yeh kaam kare? " I said.

" Tum try karo, hosakta hai phir woh response kare? After all tum same blood ho, aur family bhi. "

I looked down at the ouija board and the motionless planchette, " Priyanka Nayak-"

I didn't even finish the sentence before the disc started to move. It glided Smoothly once around the board before coming back to hover where it had been before.

" Is that how spirit say hello, or just the app having glitch? " I asked

" Shh! Kitni negative ho tum. " Jay slapped my hand lightly.

" Priyanka Nayak, kya yeh tum hi ho? Tumhari cousin tumse baat karna chahti hai. " Jay said.

" Kaise technically hum cousin-," I began but the planchette was already moving, slowly it slid over to YES, and then quickly returned to the corner of the board.

" Pakka, voice activation software hai yeh." I said with my free hand I reached across the table to pinch one of Jay's fries.

He turned to me, then said, " Aatma, tum kaise mari?"

The planchette hovered a little longer this time before sliding over towards the letters and spelling out: B-A-A-R-I-S-H

" Matlab? " I asked.

" Pata nhi. " Jay said.

The planchette went on to the spell: V-A-L-U (Sand)

" Baarish aur Valu? " I said

" That's something weird, valu means sand and barish means rain. " Thinking about it.

" Means koi aisi jagah jaha sand hai like koi beach ya sea? Aur jaha barish bohot hoti hai. " Jay said.

" Aatma? " Jay began, but the planchette was already moving again. One by one, it spelled out words.

B-A-B-A

B-O-L-L-E

G-A-T-E

N-A-K-O

K-H-O-L-U

" Sarah, mujhe yeh language nHi aata, matlab batao. "

" Marathi mein bola hai yeh, iska matlab papa ne bolla hai gate open mat karo. " I explained.

" Bohot random hai yeh. " Jay got confused.

" So Priyanka maari kyunki usne gate kholo? " Jay asked.

Before I could answer the planchette started to move again, gliding smoothly around the screen:

S-U-Z-Y

I-S

E-V-I-L

" Suzy, ab yeh suzy kon hai? " Jay looked at me for answer but I nodded my head in denial.

" Priyanka Nayak? Yeh Suzy kon hai? "

The planchette did a little jump before whizzing over to YES. And then:

B-A-A-R-I-S-H

G-A-T-E

M-A-T

K-H-O-L-O

V-A-L-U

B-A-A-R-I-S-H

T-H-A-N-D

T-H-A-N-D

" Lagta hai yeh bhoot, pagal hai. " Jay said.

" Waise tum toh new bike lene wale the na? " I asked.

" Haa, but tumhe pata hai na mujhse savings nhi hoti. " Jay said yawning.

" Waise, tumhe pata hai bhooto ko future dikhta hai? " He asked in excitement.

" Toh? Tum kya soch rahe ho? " He smirk creepily.

" Spirit mein kab marne wala hu? " He asked without hesitation.

This time the planchette gave a different answer.

A-A-J

" Lagta hai tumhari cousin ko mein pasand nhi. " Jay said jokingly.

But before I could answer, we both flitched as a tinkly, music box style tune started to play on his phone.

" Tumne new ringtone kab set ki? " I asked.

" I have never heard it before. " Jay reply.

He shook his head and gave me his best innocent look.

" It must be a part of app, toh logo ko lage yeh aap genuine hai samjhi? "

" Jhooth mat bolo! " I said with a little angry voice.

" I swear, mujhe nhi pata yeh kaise hua. " Jay replied.

The music keep on playing again and again which irritated me a lot.

Jay tapped the screen to turn off the app but, though the voice stopped singing, the ouija boardscreen wouldn't close. The planchette started spinning around the board magically.

" Dude? Lagta hai app mein error hai. " I said. I noticed the screen light flicker, and all the lights in cafe flickered with it.

Jay and I looked at each other and I saw the first glimmer of uncertainty pass over his face. And then every light in the cafe went out, leaving us in the darkness.

There were grumblings and muttering from the customers, small children start crying.

My sight went to Jay's phone, I looked at it and saw the planchette fly over to number nine and then start counting down through the numbers. When it got to zero, someone in the cafe screamed, a high pitch, painful voice.
